Birds On Display*
The birds will be on display at no charge Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, weather permitting.
African Augur Buzzard
The most numerous bird of prey on the African continent and cousin to the American Red-tailed Hawk. Only 28 currently live in the United States.
Saker Falcon
From Central Asia, though thought to be desert birds because of their use by Bedouin hunters of Saudi Arabia for over 3 thousand years, they are strong flyers capable of taking flighted and ground quarry. They face loss of territory due to war and human expansion.
European Eagle Owl
The largest owl species on earth and at the top of the food chain, they are called eagle owls because of the size of their feet. They hunt day and night taking prey as large as sitka deer when trained for falconry.
Other birds of prey may be substituted based on training and availability.
The birds will be on display from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
HC Rineer Sons - August 19-23
HC Rineer Sons will have an E85 ethanol powered Go-Kart on display. A few lucky kids will have the opportunity to take a ride in the Earth-friendly Go-Kart. Also on demonstration will be a Biodiesel powered Jeep Liberty. Be sure to stop by to learn about Biofuels and how they are being used. You might even get a chance to ride on ride on a vehicle that really brings the field to fuel.
Lancaster County Department of Parks & Recreation - Tuesday, August 19
LCDPR will be on hand with interesting displays about conservation. One small display will be of human-made and natural materials in a cemetary and how long they will take to break down. This display will dramatize that many built materials take a long time to disintegrate and will litter the landscape in the meantime. A couple of animal skeletons will be added to this display to help catch attention.
Another small display will promote green living, and the benefits of buying locally, recycling, reducing consumption and reusing materials.
PA Department of Environmental Protection - Friday, August 22
The PA Department of Environmental Protection will feature an interactive display where children, youth and adults can learn about alternative energy and energy conservation. Activities will include an Energy IQ game, where families can test their knowledge about energy conservation and alternative energy. Kids (and adults) also can learn about solar energy by racing model solar cars.
